Sonny Bryan's Smokehouse is the fourth best southern BBQ according to USA Today readers

The votes are in. According to USA Today's recent travel-themed "10Best" polls Sonny Bryan's Smokehouse is the No. 4 choice for "Best Southern BBQ."

It was beaten by Joe's Kansas City Bar-B-Que in Kansas City, Kan. (the No. 1 choice), Cooper's Old Time Pit Bar-B-Que in Llano and Luling City Market in Luling. The only other Texas representative in the top 10 is Black's Barbecue in Lockhart (No. 10).

"Texas is world famous for its barbecue, but surprisingly Dallas is not - with the notable exception of legendary Sonny Bryan's Smokehouse," the poll says. "They have been doing it here for well over half a century, serving everyone from Julia Child to Warren Buffet to President George W. Bush, and it is unique among BBQ joints as a James Beard Award winner."

Of the other categories D-FW locations were nominated for only The State Fair of Texas made a top 10 list. It was the No. 7 choice for "Best Southern Event," which we think is selling Big Tex a bit short. It was beaten by festivals about watermelons and Elvis. Austin's SXSW didn't even make the top 10.
