Denton festival Oaktopia will take over the music-centric town for a third year this fall, and from the looks of a recent lineup announcement, it might just be the biggest one yet.

Oaktopia: Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros / Minus the Bear / Thundercat / Father / Sarah Jaffe

Indie folk-pop collective Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros will be headlining the three-day event slated for September 25-27, alongside other national acts like indie rockers Minus the Bear, funky fresh bassist Thundercat and electronic producer Shlohmo.

But Oaktopia has always been about elevating the local talent, as festival co-founder Matt Battaglia told me last year, so expect a strong lineup of D-FW artists. Per the first announcement, the fest includes performances by Sarah Jaffe, the BoomBachs, Jessie Frye, Dome Dwellers and Kaela Sinclair, among others.

[UPDATE July 24 at 1:13 p.m.: Oaktopia announced a second wave of artists to play the event, including Polyphonic Spree, Bright Light Social Hour, and Kevin Drew from Broken Social Scene. See the updated full lineup below.]

Founded in 2013, Oaktopia spawned from a desire to keep Denton music on display year-round, according to Battaglia. In its first two years, Oaktopia grew from 40 to more than 120 bands, of which about 100 were local to North Texas.

It's had some growing pains to be sure -- last year Neon Indian could not perform because of an equipment mix up -- but that doesn't seem to have hindered organizers, who are asking $57 for a three-day pass or a lofty $99 for VIP pass (that includes a T-shirt, access to a VIP lounge and some free food and beer).

We'll keep you updated on the lineup and other details as more information becomes available.
