CONCERTS AND NIGHTCLUBS

Most nightspots around town are going to welcome 2006 with some kind of celebration. The typical setup is a live band or DJ and a barrage of party favors, balloons and cheap bubbly at the witching (er, smooching?) hour. The events on this page, all on Dec. 31, offer more than the typical festivities.

NIGHTCLUBS

Across the Street Bar
Texas Tech's playing in the Cotton Bowl on Jan. 2 this year, and fans can whoop it up at this Pre-Bowl Bash and New Year's Eve Party, geared toward the team's supporters. Live music by Scott McCurry, dancing, drink specials and party favors are included. 9 p.m. at the bar, 5625 Yale Blvd. Doors open at 8. $15 in advance, $20 the day of the event. Front Gate Tickets.

Carsons Live!
The annual New Year's Eve Holiday Ball will feature a steak and seafood buffet dinner, music by Rat Ranch and DJ Eddie Black and midnight goodies. Dress code. 8 p.m. to 2 a.m. at the club, 17727 Dallas Parkway. $35 in advance, $45 the day of the event. 972-931-1111. www.ticketweb.com.

5th Avenue
TDS Productions presents its fifth annual New Year's Eve Classic with R&B and hip-hop beats by Houston's Def Jam Blaster, an appetizer buffet and midnight accouterments. Dress code. Doors open at 9:30 p.m. at the club, 14775 Midway Road, Addison. $15. 972-503-9777. www.ticketweb.com.

Grapevine Bar
The longtime Oak Lawn watering hole holds its annual party with an open bar, a dinner buffet and a tented dance area. Each partygoer will get a bottle of champagne and a T-shirt. Oh, and there's a penthouse-suite after-party at 1 a.m. at a local hotel, too. 7 p.m. to 2 a.m. at the bar, 3902 Maple Ave. $65 in advance, $80 at the door. 214-522-8466.

Hard Rock Cafe
KZPS-FM (92.5)'s New Year's Eve Party will feature live music by Stevie Ray Vaughan tribute act Voodoo Blue as well as the Leah Marr Band. Table seating and a prime rib dinner are included. 10 p.m. (dinner at 9) at the venue, 2601 McKinney Ave. $60; $25 for party only. 214-855-0007.

Hot Rods and Hoggs
Gasoline, the sort-of-new gig for former Pantera and Damageplan drummer Vinnie Paul Abbott (brother of slain metal guitarist "Dimebag" Darrell Abbott), headlines this party. Doors open at 8 p.m. at the club, 706 N. Watson Road, Arlington. $75. Ticketmaster.

Kitchen 1924
Still ashamed to be a fan of 1980s pop culture? Soothe yourself with the like-minded at this "Save New Wave"-themed celebration, which will feature live '80s music from the Mumbles as well as complimentary food and drinks. 6 p.m. to 2 a.m. at the venue, 1924 Abrams Road. $30 before 8 p.m., $40 after. 214-821-1924.

Knights of Columbus No. 799
Celtic superband the Killdares perform at this all-ages shindig with a buffet dinner, entertainment, dance music, a cash bar and a separate party area for kids. 7 p.m. to 1 a.m. at the hall, 10110 Shoreview. $50, $10 for children. 214-348-3931.

Lakewood Theater
Sinatra-style cabaret specialist Ricki Derek's second annual New Year's Ring a Ding will feature Mr. Derek and his Vegas Seven (one more than his typical Six), as well as comedy skits, an appetizer buffet from Carrabba's and midnight goodies. 10 p.m. at the theater, 1825 Abrams Parkway. Market Street Square at Dallas Alley
There'll be plenty of folks to ring in 2006 at this free celebration both outdoors and in the subterranean clubs. Everyone will get party favors at midnight, too. 8 p.m. to 2 a.m. at the complex, 602 Munger St. 214-969-0300.

Sunset Lounge
One of Dallas' newest nightspots is the site for Dallas Productions' and 214 Promotions' swank NYE05 party, with DJ Parker Lawson, an open bar and midnight champagne toast. 9 p.m. to 2 a.m. at the lounge, 3030 Ross Ave. $99 in advance, $125 the day of the event. www.dallasproductions.com.

Winfrey Point
One of the city's higher-profile New Year's Eve parties has abandoned its usual nightclub home for a pavilion at White Rock Lake. DFW Exposed and LynxxDFW's event features music by DJ Michael Greenspan, an open bar and the usual midnight goodies, but reservations are required, so act quickly. 9 p.m. to 2 a.m. at the venue, 950 E. Lawther Drive. $50 for women, $70 for men, $100 per couple. www.dfwexposed.com.

Zúbar
Chicago's DJ Diz and Portland, Ore.'s, DJ Othertempo will supply the rhythms at this otherwise traditional upscale soiree. 9 p.m. to 2 a.m. at the bar, 2012 Greenville Ave. $20. 214-887-0071. www.zubar.com.

Brave Combo
Fusion polka, Grammy Award-winners, great dancing and midnight bubbly. Need we say more? 10 p.m. at the Gypsy Tea Room's Ballroom, 2513 Main St. $20. Front Gate Tickets.

Burden Brothers
Dallas' ultimate anti-major-label rock act (led by Todd Lewis of the Toadies) is now a five-piece; it'll welcome the new year at Cowtown's newest rock spot. Post-punk dudes the Feds will open the show. 9:30 p.m. at Axis, 120 S. Main St., Fort Worth. $20 in advance, $25 the day of the show. Front Gate Tickets.

Sonny Burgess
The Cleburne-based straight-ahead country crooner will belt out some of his redneck lullabies for honky-tonkin' revelers in historic Stockyards Station, Fort Worth. 7 p.m. $20 in advance, $25 at the door. 817-572-4400.

Deryl Dodd
The Dallas-bred former Baylor football star headlines the New Year's Eve shindig at the area's biggest roadhouse-style honky-tonk. 8:30 p.m. at Southern Junction, 5574 Texas Highway 276, Rockwall. $12-$22. 972-771-2418.

Element Eighty
It's on its own now after a major-label deal collapsed last year, but this modern rock act still puts on a slammin' show. Necrogazm, Born 2 Nothing and System Overload will open. 7 p.m. at the Ridglea Theater, 6025 Camp Bowie Blvd., Fort Worth. Doors open at 6. $10 in advance, $13 the day of the show. Flyleaf
Known as Passerby before it hit the big time, the Temple-based emo-metal group welcomes 2006 with loyal local fans before joining a tour with Seether and Shinedown. All-ages show at the Galaxy Club, 2808 Commerce St. Doors open at 8:30 p.m. $20. Ticketmaster.

Kevin Fowler
You'd think the World's Largest Honky Tonk could draw a bigger name to bring in 2006. But Mr. Fowler, a former hair-metal guitar whiz from Amarillo, is Texan to the core; expect beer, but leave the bait and ammo at home, OK? 10:30 p.m. at Billy Bob's Texas, 2520 Rodeo Plaza, Fort Worth. $10 and $22. Bugs Henderson and Django Walker
Mr. Henderson, one of Texas' foremost blues-rock guitarists, will welcome the new year with his Shuffle Kings in McNair Studio, while Jerry Jeff Walker protégé (really: he's his son) Django Walker will have his full band in tow in Cliburn Hall. Sara Hickman

Ray Wylie Hubbard and others

Jack Ingram

Jimmy LaFave
Originally from Wills Point, folk rocker Mr. LaFave will commemorate 2006's arrival at David Card's eclectic venue despite thick and heavy ties in Austin. Jayson Bales will open the show. 9 p.m. at Poor David's Pub, 1313 S. Lamar St. $25. Front Gate Tickets.

Smokin' Joe Kubek and Bnois King
The two longtime bluesmen take the stage at 10 p.m. at J&J Blues Bar, 937 Woodward, Fort Worth. $30. 817-870-2337.

Tracy Lawrence
Though not the country hit machine he was in the 1990s, the Arkansas native still draws a faithful crowd. Cowboys Arlington, 2540 E. Abram St., Arlington. Doors open at 7 p.m. $12 and $25 in advance ($50 VIP tickets are sold out), $15 at the door. Ticketmaster.

Olospo and Chris Holt

Blake Shelton
