All the world's a stage, and it's right in your back yard

By NANCY CHURNIN / The Dallas Morning News

You don't have to travel to take your children to exciting places this summer. With a little help from local theater groups, you can journey to Neverland in Peter Pan or the world of Peanuts in You're a Good Man, Charlie Brown. There's something for all ages, too.

Puppet shows should enchant the youngest. The elementary school crowd can take its pick from plays performed by kids for kids and those performed by professionals all around the Dallas-Fort Worth area. And teens are the target audience for Twelfth Night, Les Misérables and The Wrestling Season, a challenging, contemporary look at how rumors rupture lives on a high school wrestling team. Package the shows with a good heart-to-heart on the ride home and you just might leave your kids with a memory they'll always treasure. Group rates are available, too, for many of the shows.

Critic's choice

In a summer spilling over with cool kids' theater offerings, there's one that soars above the rest: Peter Pan, starring Cathy Rigby, presented by Dallas Summer Musicals.

Ms. Rigby bills it as her farewell tour. Of course, she billed her last tour, which also played DSM, as her farewell, but we won't quibble. Precious few actresses have been able to make the part of the boy who never grows up their own. Mary Martin managed the feat, followed by Sandy Duncan and, for the last decade, Ms. Rigby.

The diminutive Olympic gymnast who won an Emmy for the television broadcast of the show brings a boyish delight in physical prowess as well as a strong voice to the stage. Behind the scenes, however, Ms. Rigby more closely resembles Wendy, the ultimate mother figure. She brings her own brood to the show, including three of her kids, a daughter-in-law and a nephew to perform in various roles. Check out the Oscar-nominated film Finding Neverland for one more reason this production should enchant adults as much as children.
