'Dream'-y outing on a dreary evening
File 2004/Staff photo The Global Dinner with organic black beans, brown rice, chips and cheese is a favorite vegetarianoption at Dream Cafe.
The weather was dreary and I was feeling a little weary after a busy day
at work. But a Thursday evening spent catching up with a friend at the
Quadrangle complex brightened things considerably.
We met at the lounge at Riccardi's, where the lights were low and a few
clusters of suit-wearing types were meeting for post-work drinks. Latin
guitarist Tomas Sclar was perched in a corner, skillfully playing away.
With glasses of wine in hand, we got down to the good stuff – gossiping.
However, we did pause our marathon session to order some tasty
bruschetta and to get a free happy-hour appetizer from the little buffet
in the corner (the night we were there it was pasta with vegetables).
All that blabbing made us even hungrier, so we braved the rain to hit
the nearby Dream Cafe. Our server provided some unintentional humor by
asking us if we wanted to sit inside or on the patio. Since it was
pouring by then, we opted for staying dry, though in sunny weather the
patio is quite appealing. There's even a play area for kids.
I'm a vegetarian and like the range of offerings there, though there are
plenty of options for those who wouldn't dream of a meatless meal. This
time, I skipped my usual (the Global Dinner with organic black beans,
brown rice, chips and cheese) and tried the migas, scrambled eggs and
tortilla strips with salsa and cheese. My companion sipped a margarita
and dug into a bacon cheddar burger.
A curly-haired singer who was setting up when we got there was a
pleasant surprise, and her voice reminded us a little of Sheryl Crow.
Unbeknown to us, Dream Cafe hosts live music each Thursday night. Her
presence served as another bright spot in our rainy-day outing.
The bottom line:
WHAT: Kicking back at the Quadrangle
WHERE: Riccardi's (214-303-0881) and Dream Cafe (214-954-0486),
both in the Quadrangle, 2800 Routh St.
THE TAB: $52.31 (including tax and tips): $25.81 at Dream Cafe,
$26.50 at Riccardi's
THE SCORE: Munching and music, times two
