This ambitious outing required a nap beforehand. I had committed to meeting friends for the next installment of midnight movies at the Inwood Theatre, which run every Friday and Saturday night. Clue was scheduled for the night we went, and for that kind of cinematic greatness, I was willing to alter my day.

Admittedly, it was a little weird cruising through the Park Cities at 11 p.m. The majority of the stoplights were off, which left us alternating between rolling cautiously through flashing yellow lights and coming to a complete stop at the flashing reds. All in all, we were going about the speed of evolution.

An odd thing about midnight movies, or at least an odd thing when that midnight movie is Clue, is they draw an interesting crowd that's a cross between Hot Topic and Delia's, with a little Urban Outfitters thrown in for flavor. (It's a shopping reference.)

And then came Jimmy, who served as sort of a movie warm-up act and emcee. After dispensing a few interesting nuggets (the original name for the Clue board game was Cluedo), he led a strange little contest to correctly choose which movie weapon was allegedly used to attack a fellow employee. Among the choices were a film canister, a velvet rope and a film reel in the shape of a noose. It was the rope, by the way.

After sharing a list of upcoming midnight movies, Jimmy wished us well and departed to a smattering of applause and general mumbles of, "Um, o-kay." The downside of the film portion of the evening? Clue, though it was able to draw a respectable crowd at midnight, hasn't quite reached Rocky Horror Picture Show status, so we were reduced to whispering the dialogue quietly among ourselves.

If we thought driving through the deserted Park Cities in the middle of the night was only weird, the same drive at 2 a.m. seemed downright eerie. We decided food would set things right, and we all needed an energy boost after our very long day.

Our options were limited, and we wanted a change of scenery from Cafe Brazil, so we settled on all-night diner Buzzbrews. We liked it. There was no wait. The decor was super cute, and the tasties on the menu had us poring over our options for a good 15 minutes. We finally settled on chicken quesadillas, Amigas (Buzzbrews' version of migas) and a fruity French-toast-type dish, all of which came to $24, including drinks and tip.

One drawback to eating anyplace at 2:30 in the morning: There's not much to do with your sugar-induced second wind. Or maybe I'm just rusty in the ways of the nighthawks.

The bottom line:

WHAT: Midnight mystery movies and munchies.

WHERE: Inwood Theatre, 5458 W. Lovers Lane, 214-764-9106; and Buzzbrews, 4154 N. Central Expressway, 214-826-7100.

THE TAB: $51.50 ($27.50 for three movie tickets, $24 for three entrees and drinks at Buzzbrews).

THE SCORE: '80s kitsch is best enjoyed with a nap beforehand.
