The world can be depressing. Whether you're bummed about the economy, politics, family drama or just the fact that Batman v Superman was a disappointment, a lot of us could use some cheering up.

Thankfully God, in His infinite wisdom, blessed the world with cute animals.

On Jan. 25, Smithsonian's National Zoo announced the birth of a new gray seal pup, who appropriately charmed the internet.

A Twitter user in Virginia challenged her local aquarium to top that. They accepted the challenge.

What followed was what Mashable called a "Twitter war" between the National Zoo and the Virginia Aquarium, with each trying to out-cute the other. Just look at that happy turtle, though!

Before long other zoos and aquariums from all over the country began to get involved.

Apparently, the first rule of cuteness fight club is that everybody should talk about cuteness fight club.

The Dallas Zoo got in on the action after Mashable's article went online, but their contribution was no less welcome.

And because they didn't want the fun to end, they continued it today, with the added cute factor that it was this baby chimp's birthday.

Fort Worth was late to the party, but we accept their apology.

If you need more cute animal photos (and let's be real, you do), you can check out the #CuteAnimalTweetOff hashtag on Twitter.
