Cats and coffee have become a coveted pairing since the cat cafe trend invaded Dallas-Fort Worth last year, and one local pet supplies store is transforming its space on select weekends to provide both in one place.
The Cat Connection in North Dallas kicks off a monthly cat cafe series on Saturday, April 9 with free caffeine beverages and a room full of furry felines for cuddling. There will even be a celebrity cat, Sauerkraut Kitty, onsite for selfies. No kitten!
For those unfamiliar with the concept, it's simple: A cat cafe is a coffee shop with a relaxed environment that's also home to a bunch of cats that mingle with patrons. The animals are usually up for adoption, so if you make a new friend you can likely give him or her a forever home.
This is the second year Cat Connection has hosted the pop-up series. Erin Flaherty, the store's director of communications, said the owners decided to host it again not only because of how many people previously turned out, but also because shelters need help with adoptions.
"Because we had such a warm winter, shelters are really inundated with kittens this year," she said. "This is our way of helping out."
Cats at the event, which runs from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, will be available for adoption and proceeds benefit Farmers Branch Animal Services. There will also be raffles and free coffee and snacks from Love Cup Coffee.
The Cat Connection hosts pop-ups once a month throughout the summer. Here's the schedule:
- Saturday, April 9 (benefiting Farmers Branch Animal Services)
- Saturday, May 14 (benefiting the DFW Purebred and Domestic Cat Rescue)
- Saturday, June 11 (benefiting Operation Kindness)
- Saturday, July 16
- Saturday, August 13
D-FW is now home to one permanent cat cafe, the Charming Cat Corner in Lewisville's Vista Ridge Mall. This one doesn't sell food or drink, but welcomes patrons to bring their own from the mall's food court. Another business, Muffinmeow Cat Cafe, hopes to open by end of year in Richardson.
