You're in luck, collectors young and old! The Perot Museum of Nature and Science wants to display your meticulously curated collections as part of an upcoming exhibition titled Eye of the Collector. The exhibit, which will run April 16 until September 5, will examine reasons that people and museums collect things.

This will be the first exhibit that the museum has curated itself, said Krista Villarreal Moore, senior communications manager for The Perot. Since the museum opened in 2012, it has relied on traveling exhibitions from other museums to supplement the permanent collection.

Eye of the Collector will be a deep examination of what it means to collect, why we collect and what stories are hidden within private collections.

"We really are curious to see what people collect and what drives them," Moore said.

Central to the exhibition will be Nancy and Randy Best's private collection which ranges from paleontological specimens, pre-Columbian artifacts, Sumerian tablets, and minerals.

Other collections featured come from an avid Dallas Cowboys fan, a world-record-setting collection of Star Wars memorabilia, a PEZ aficionado and a collection of  Thomas Jefferson swag.

The contest is open now and submissions will be accepted until Sunday, February 21 at 11:59 p.m. For a full list of rules, see the contest website.

There are three categories for entries:

  • Best Youth Collection (Ages 17 and under)
  • Most Unique Collection
  • Most Visually Stunning Collection

Five finalists from each category will be selected by a jury. Those finalists will then be voted on by the public to select the People's Choice Award winning collection, which will be displayed in the main exhibit. The other finalists' collections will be displayed throughout the museum during the exhibition's run.
