Peticolas Brewing Co. took the top honor and the title of grand national champion at the U.S. Open Beer Championship, an international beer competition that took place over the weekend in Oxford, Ohio.
The Dallas brewery garnered five medals, including three gold for its Black Curtains imperial stout, Great Scot! Scottish ale and its flagship Velvet Hammer imperial red ale. Peticolas also earned silver medals for its Royal Scandal English pale ale and Sledge Hammer barley wine.
The competition ranks the top 10 breweries based on number of medals won. Peticolas Brewing took first place and was the only Texas brewery to make the rankings.
"This award gives us validation that we are achieving our goal of brewing world class beer and providing a unique experience here in Dallas," said Michael Peticolas, brewery owner and founder.
Peticolas Brewing wasn't the only North Texas brewery to win accolades. In fact, Dallas-Fort Worth brought home 14 medals from the competition — up from 13 in 2017 — adding to the Lone Star State's total of 26 awards. More than 6,300 beers created by professional breweries and award-winning home brewers worldwide were submitted for judging, according to a statement from the U.S. Open Beer Championship.
