Update Dec. 13 at 4 p.m.: This story has been updated with a comment from JR's Bar and Grill.
A Dallas bar is receiving internet backlash after Tamar Braxton says she was turned away Monday night for looking "like a gangster."
The singer, who is in town to perform at The Great Xscape Tour at Verizon Theatre on Dec. 13, posted on her Instagram story Monday night that she was turned away from JR's Bar and Grill on Cedar Springs Road in Dallas.
"Evidently I look like a gangster. I can't go in this establishment," Braxton said in her story. "Here in my favorite town Dallas, they have zero tolerance for black people."
Braxton captioned the clip "Jr's bar and grill smh."
JR's Bar and Grill was "simply following our published procedures," when it denied Braxton entry on Monday, according to Waylon Tate, a spokesman for the venue.
In a statement provided to GuideLive Wednesday, Tate said the bar has "strict guidelines" to maintain the safety of its patrons and employees. It was unclear exactly which guidelines he was referring to; we've asked.
"We take immense pride in the diversity of our employees, contractors, patrons and our commitment to maintain a culture of inclusion and responsible celebration," he continued. "It would have been a beautiful experience and honor to add Tamar Braxton to the long list of celebrities who have enjoyed JR's as a safe and inclusive entertainment venue. We are deeply saddened that she didn't experience the love that awaited her inside."
