This $400 bottle of scotch is a once in a lifetime libation

In the last few years, whiskey has grown in popularity. With so many brands available and new distilleries emerging or redefining themselves, it's easy to get overwhelmed with all the options. This column is here to help you learn the basics of various whiskies, scotches and bourbons before you invest in a new bottle.

The spirit: McKinnon Glen 35 Years Old

McKinnon Glen 35 Years Old is a  blended scotch, with a smooth flavor and mild peat. However, better than the taste is the interesting story behind the bottle. According to fellow whiskey writer Christopher Null, a USAF serviceman bought into a share of Ben Nevis Distillery's new make spirit in 1971 before the operation went out of business. The stock stayed in storage until 2006, when 484 gallons were bottled for sale. This is literally all of it, he says -- 70 bottles of cask strength and 953 bottles of 80-proof blended whiskey.

Needless to say these bottles are hard to come by; I got my bottle from Goody Goody. I know one of the marketing guys, and he told me he found "something special." To date Christopher Null is the only other person I have found writing about this scotch, and it seems to be extremely hard to find. I called around to some local Goody Goody's and found one bottle at the Greenville Avenue store. I would suggest grabbing one of these rare whiskeys before they are all gone, they make great conversation starters.
