Bocce and booze return to downtown with reopening of The Grove backyard bar

Outdoor volleyball and boozy snow cones have returned to downtown Dallas, just in time for patio weather.

The Grove at Harwood, a backyard bar and eatery near American Airlines Center, reopened in mid-March after closing for the winter. But the spot celebrates the season April 30 with a party featuring live music, libations and a charity sand volleyball tournament.

The Grove, as it's called for short, opened in May 2015 as one of several new concepts coming to the Harwood District, a sliver of real estate between Uptown and Downtown Dallas owned by developer Harwood International. The long-term goal is to sprout 18 walkable city blocks' worth of destination bars and restaurants.

This venue specifically was designed with active socialites in mind. Attractions include two sand volleyball courts and a bocce ball court, plus equipment for badminton, football and other backyard games. The Grove serves a modest menu of snacks and panninis, alongside beer, wine and spirits. And because it's outside, the bar has also become a popular destination for dog owners and their furry friends.

On April 30, attendees can expect beats from DJs Blake Ward and Ducati, food and drink specials, shopping, giveaways and a "special surprise" at the bar for those who arrive early. The party, which doubles as an anniversary soiree for local blog Dallasites101, runs from 1-7 p.m., and those interested in registering a volleyball team may do so via Eventbrite. Otherwise the event is free to attend.
