Drink well in two languages at Madrina's bar

The new Mexican-French restaurant features cocktails that emphasize tequila, mescal and brandy.

Settle in at the horseshoe bar at Madrina, and while you puzzle over the menu of the new Mexican-French hybrid restaurant, order with confidence from the bifurcated cocktail list -- one side Mexican, the other French. No cause for brow-furrowing there, just delights.

It offers a few twists on classics (the Jack Rose, a mai tai, a brandy Old-Fashioned), a number of creative pirouettes (Born Sinner, Night Changes) and a south-of-the-border favorite brought north, the bracing Carajillo. That coffee drink -- simply Licor 43, a Spanish vanilla liqueur, and espresso over ice -- was the find of a first visit to Madrina.

The cocktail menu and the larger spirits list reinforce the cuisine; tequila,mescal and brandy, including the fantastic California label Germain-Robin, are represented in breadth.

The drinks range from $10 to $14. Madrina is considering a happy hour, but has nothing in place yet.
