Deep Ellum has earned the title as one of Dallas' buzziest neighborhoods with a slew of recent bar, restaurant and music venue openings. Spots like Luscher's Red Hots, the Bomb Factory and Braindead Brewing, among others, are filling long-vacant storefronts and attracting huge crowds in the process.

So it's no surprise that more business owners are laying roots in the community, including Chris Young and Seth Byars, two service industry veterans who plan to open a no-frills bar called the Parlor on Commerce later this year.

"We're not going to try and be a sports bar or a cocktails bar or a beer bar," Young says. The duo is simply aiming for a comfortable atmosphere that "doesn't try to do too much," he says.

Young and Byars have been working together at various bars and restaurants for nearly a decade, including stints at the Quarter Bar in Uptown and the former Deep Ellum Live concert venue. Both had considered opening their own joints, but teamed up about year and a half ago after realizing their visions aligned.

The Parlor on Commerce will inhabit a 2,300-square-foot space near Angry Dog, Dallas Comedy House and Luscher's Red Hots. Since construction has yet to begin on the bar, much of the menu is up in the air. But Young promises a balance of quality drinks that they can churn out quickly -- just in case 4,300 people go looking for a nightcap after a show at the Bomb Factory just a block a way. The plan includes a selection of craft beer and a handful of specialty cocktails.

Food offerings are also a big question mark, but we know what not to expect.

"Obviously I don't want to compete with the four amazing burgers down here. And being around the corner from Pecan Lodge, we're definitely not doing barbecue," Young says.

Young was hesitant to give a target open date for the Parlor on Commerce, saying only he hopes to be open by fall or the end of the year.

"We really want to get open as soon as possible," he says.
