This North Texas chauffeur has been driving for nearly 23 years. He’s seen a lot.

Silver West’s David Livingston has driven famous comedians, a Kennedy, a Texas Rangers pitcher and rock stars.

Editor’s note: This story is part of our new beat about North Texas personalities called High Profile.

It’s Friday night at Shannon Wynne’s Flying Fish on Irving Boulevard, and there’s a line to the front door. We order and grab seats at one of the communal bar tops. Seated across from us is a friendly man who sticks out — crisp white shirt, necktie.

He’s chatty and so are we. His name is David Livingston. He hands me a business card that says “Professional Chauffeur.” He has just finished a drop-off. I admire his mustache; it goes down and curls on the ends. Clients ask for him sometimes as “David with the mustache,” not to be confused with “David with the ponytail.” They have three drivers named David.

Our David says he has been driving for nearly 23 years. He’s seen a lot. He’s been flashed by women in the backseat. He’s driven famous comedians, a Kennedy, a Texas Rangers pitcher and rock stars. He once drove a conductor to Bass Hall where country singer Wynonna Judd was waiting to greet the passenger ahead of her performance with the Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra.

David works for Silver West Executive Transportation. In its glory days, the family-owned company had more than 30 vehicles, including two Mercedes-Benz S550s. Then COVID-19 dried up business. Most drives were to doctor appointments. Silver West has since bounced back with new owners.

He got his job decades ago the old-fashioned way: “I answered an ad in the newspaper,” he says. At his driver’s test, he had to steer a 10-passenger Lincoln stretch limo through a bank drive-through without getting any scratches. He passed.

As for the customers, some like to chat, others want silence. Occasionally someone asks to ride in the passenger seat to avoid looking pampered. ”Whatever the client wants,” David says, “within reason.”
