North Texas took another step toward rebuilding its men’s basketball roster Tuesday when the Mean Green brought home one of the Dallas area’s top stars from a few years ago.
Latrell Jossell, a 6-foot-1 guard who began his career at Kansas before spending three years at Stephen F. Austin, announced his commitment to the Mean Green on Tuesday.
Jossell averaged a team-high 12.9 points per game for SFA as a junior last season, when he shot 37.4% from 3-point range.
The Keller Central product was rated as a top 15 prospect in Texas in the Class of 2020 before signing with Kansas.
Jossell played in nine games in one season with the Jayhawks before transferring to SFA. He scored in double figures in 15 of his final 16 games for the Lumberjacks last season.
Jossell is the third player to commit to UNT heading into the second season of Ross Hodge’s tenure as the Mean Green’s coach.
UNT announced Tuesday that it has signed former Creighton center Brock Vice and Longwood transfer wing Johnathan Massie.
Jossell will add a perimeter threat for UNT. He has shot 38.8% from 3-point range for his career.
UNT has several holes to fill in its lineup after last season when the Mean Green relied largely on guards Jason Edwards, CJ Noland, John Buggs III and Rubin Jones.
All four entered the transfer portal after UNT fell to Seton Hall in the second round of the National Invitation Tournament. Three have committed to other schools.
Jones is headed to Michigan, Edwards to Vanderbilt and Noland to New Mexico. Buggs has yet to announce his destination.
Jossell has shown gradual improvement throughout his career. He averaged 9.2 points in his freshman season at SFA, pushed that total to 11.8 as a sophomore and then emerged as SFA’s top threat last season.
Jossell will join a UNT team that is coming off a 19-15 season and its third straight NIT appearance.
The Mean Green won the tournament in 2023.
